Our Opportunity for Youth Employment (OYE) product uses the unique push-match-pull methodology to create meaningful employment in agriculture, energy and WASH.

We lever our expertise and network of companies to provide vocational training, on-the-job learning, and concrete employment opportunities for young people. We also help young people to fulfil their entrepreneurial aspirations by developing their skills and knowledge through training, facilitating access to money, and by coaching them in leadership and business skills.

The challenge

In many developing countries more than half of young people do not have a job or are underemployment. Not using the capabilities of young people hampers economic growth and may lead to social instability. Meaningful employment for young people is essential to achieve sustainable economic development; however they often lack relevant market skills or are not provided meaningful opportunities. Experience shows that providing education and training is not sufficient to reach meaningful employment. Many trained young people don’t have skills relevant in the jobs market or are perceived as lacking in motivation.

Our product

SNV’s Opportunities for Youth Employment (OYE) uses a market based approach to go beyond training to match young people to meaningful employment opportunities. Our approach leverages SNV’s decades’ long experience in value chain and inclusive market development to create youth employment in the agriculture, energy and sanitation sectors.

Our Opportunities for Youth Employment approach consists of the following elements:

  • Push: We train young people on basis business, life and leadership skills.
  • Match: We cooperate with vocational training centres and local companies to match participants with practical skills training opportunities and apprenticeships.
  • Pull: We match trained young people with employment options in local growth markets, and continue to mentor them deep into the job. We support them to access credit facilities through peer savings and lending associations.

Direct results and systems change

We have a strong track record of developing and delivering sustainable and effective youth unemployment solutions. More than 25,000 young people have enrolled in one of our youth employment projects.
